Fornells, on Menorca's north coast, is the starting point for diving in the Northern Marine Reserve. From its sheltered bay, centres reach within minutes dives where marine life has bounced back after decades of protection: groupers, dentex and large shoals over rocky seabeds and caves. It is a quiet spot, ideal for divers seeking pure nature away from the crowds.
Yes. The reserve, protected since 1999 between Fornells bay and Cap Gros, is divided into zones of varying protection; sport diving is allowed with authorisation across much of it. Fornells centres handle the permits and organise the trips.
Most guided dives in the Northern Marine Reserve are designed for Open Water Diver certification or above. Without certification you can do a try dive or a course right in Fornells bay.
Decades of protection have restored populations of groupers, dentex, sea bream, moray eels and large shoals of fish, plus octopuses and occasionally barracuda. It is one of the most life-rich areas in the northern Balearics.
From May to October, when visibility peaks and the sea is usually calm. In spring the water can turn murky below 25 metres; summer offers the best conditions.
